Mechanical Bull

I rode a mechanical bull for the first time ever just a few weeks ago out at Thanksgiving Point. Man, what a hoot. It was fun, but it's harder than you think it is. I stayed on for over 4 seconds, but not quite 5. I was hoping to do a little better, but I think I did alright.

I think I did something weird to my arm when I fell off, because it still hurts. At least I have a battle wound to brag about. :)

My sisters, niece and I looking at pictures. So fun! My niece was so fascinated with the pictures I had on my computer.

The saga continues...

Well, I fixed my car (finally) and it worked for a month. Now it won't start. (Huge sigh). I spent $3,000 on it and it ran for a total of 3 months. I could have leased a car for cheaper than that, but without all the headache. (Another big sigh)

But, here's the good news--my grandpa's wife (not my grandma) doesn't want her car anymore, so she's giving it to me for FREE! Yay! It's a '93 Mercury Sable. She says it runs well, and that's all I care about right now. Whew! I can finally rest easy about my vehicle for a while.

7 more months...

...until I graduate and never have to go to school again. Muaahaahaahaa! I applied for a job with KPMG Forensic (one of the Big Four) in San Francisco. Not sure if I will take it or not--we'll see.

P.S. Forensic accounting is basically fraud investigation. Like CSI, but for accountants!

Chihuly

I love the work of Dale Chihuly. I saw his exhibit at the NY Botanical Gardens and I was blown away. You have to check his website out. Here are some of the pictures I took while I was there. He makes everything out of blown glass.

My trip to DC

Me at the White House. It was so awesome to be in DC and see all the amazing monuments. I saw the Capital Building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the WWII Memorial, the Treasury building, the Vietnam Memorial, etc. I also got to see the original Declaration of Independence and the original Constitution and Bill of Rights. There is so much to see there--I highly recommend visiting DC if you get the chance.

Yesterday when I was playing touch rugby, a guy tagged me and HE fell over. Everyone was laughing because he was about my height and weighed somewhere around 200+ lbs. I’m the man...I mean woman.

I should be a photographer. Look at these pictures! Beautiful. Too bad the sky was all hazy (as usual).

Confession: I got teary-eyed when I saw the Statue of Liberty and thought about what it must have been like for people to come to the US in the late 1800's/early 1900's, see it for the first time as they were sailing in to Ellis Island, and realize that they were finally free. Wow!

I'm famous!

I went to watch Train at the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series and ended up being on TV 3 times! I was actually standing next to Mike, the weather man when he did his report. I also got a picture with him. Jealous? :)

In case you were wondering, this is what Oregon looks like. Ahhh, the Great Northwest. I was there last month for a few days to see my sister's dance performance, and I went on a hike in the Columbia River Gorge. I took this picture before I went swimming in the pool this waterfall pours into. It's like Hawaii, only the water's cold. :)

Here's me and my friend Paul at South Street Seaport on the East River. I think we were the only adults who took a picture with these. We had a blast down at the seaport. There's always street performers, festivals, and other stuff like that going on.

Computer woes

Sorry guys, my hard drive completely died, so I can't use my computer until I get a new one. I'm using one from work, but I can't add programs to it, so I can't download my pictures onto it, so I can't post pictures on my blog, so you'll just have to wait a while.

On a brighter note, my best friend Mike was miraculously able to retrive all my data from my hard drive, so I didn't loose anything!!!!!! YAY!

Cyclone of LOVE

The Cyclone at Coney Island. I think it's one of the oldest rollercoasters ever.

The LOVE sculpture on 55th, Manhattan. Too bad I can't take pictures of myself. This one is blury, but the one I took of the sculpture by itself is perfectly clear.

Grand Central Station

This station is huge, people. This picture is of the main hall, but the hugeness is underground. I swear you could walk all day down there and never see it all. This part of the station is a mere blip compared to the rest of the station.

Seinfeld

Guess what restaurant is only a few blocks from my house. I think I'm going to eat there tomorrow, just cuz.

To those of you who already read this blog, I went by there last night, and the sign wasn't burned out. Maybe I just couldn't see that part because it was daytime. Anyway...

The only thing that would keep me from eating there is that they failed their health department inspection last year, and the place is apparently a greasy spoon. I think I'll buy a water. :)

I'm in Manhattan

I went to Mesa on Wednesday, had training on Thursday and Friday, hung around till Sunday, and then my flight left for New York this morning at 6:00am. I had to be out the door by 4:30. I'm a little tired, but good.

I took my first ever NY taxi to my apartment and went grocery shopping at the local Morton Williams market. That was interesting—the aisles there are so small that you could hardly pass by another person, even with your miniature carts. I have determined that you just can’t be fat and live in NY. :) I liked it, though, and I think I’m going to just love being here.

At first I thought that NY would be so scary, but it’s not as bad as I thought—just like walking in downtown Portland, OR. Harlem reminded me of my mission, although I think it’s probably more dangerous that the areas I was in.

It’s crazy how you go one or two blocks in one direction and all of a sudden you are in a scary part of town, but you head the other way, and you’re in the safest part of town. Do scary people not cross those imaginary boundaries or what? Weird. I’m on 113th and Harlem starts on 125th, but I feel totally safe here. Well, obviously it’s not Provo, but I’m sure you know what I mean.

My apartment is cute, and I like it a lot. I live in housing owned by Columbia University, so it’s safe, and a pretty decent place to live. It’s a block east of Broadway.

I’m trying to learn the subway system, but I know it’s going to take a while. The thing I’m worried about is getting off at an unsafe stop. I think that most of the childcare centers I will be auditing are in kind of sketchy areas, so that’s scary to me. I hope everything will be ok. By the end of the summer I think I will know the subway pretty well.

Can I just tell you how excited and frightened I am all at the same time?! I don’t know whether to cry or shout for joy. I’ll try to keep you all updated on how things are going and what I’m doing. If you’ve been to NY, tell me about the places I absolutely have to see.

I have an auditing internship with CN Resource that begins in May and ends some time in the middle of July. I'll find out more details soon.

Ahhhhh! I'm so excited!

Take that, U of U!

The BYU Rugby team won the Wasatch Cup today against the U!!!!!! It was the sweetest game ever. 39-3 BYU.

The best and last play of the game was when Sika broke away and ran 60 metres for the try. BYU is now in the playoffs and we get the home game advantage. Oh yeah!

Really, is this necessary?

I just took the the most ridiculous test. I know, you're all surprised given my major, but it's true. I ask you, though, is this really necessary? I mean, we're in the master's program for crying out loud. They have already weeded us out! The stupid ones have been cut from the pack--no need to prove ourselves anymore!

So get this--the professor (who wrote the test) said that it took him 2 hours to take it. Two hours to take his own test, people. The one that he wrote. He already knows the answers!

So, ever so kindly, he allowed us 4 hours to take his stupid test. Thanks a lot. In four hours I completed about 1/2 of the test. Yeah, so pretty much I failed it, cuz I had to guess on half the stinkin' test!

Seriously, I don't think I need this right now. He should be voted off the Accounting Program Island.

Gaaah!

In other news, my sister is getting married next weekend, so I get to fly home. Heaven! I'll get to see this little girl...

Maria
